Breaking News!! Doh!

Have you ever been made to feel so blonde???

Well I must admit there has been the odd occasion in my life where I have felt a bit similar to Homer Simpson or the like. About two years ago I was living in Dublin with a few girls from college completing my internship.

For some strange reason I had managed to land myself a cushy number so to speak; a 9 to 5 job. My flat mate Amy also had a similar job with similar hours. So as routine was routine, on a sunday evening I would arrive back in the big smoke around 7.30pm and Amy around 8.30pm.

To be honest at the time I hardly seen any television as we were more of the sociable type, heading out for a quiet meal or drink, as 20 year olds do! On this occasion both of us decided to watch the television and see if there might have been a chick flick on.

Whilst flicking from channel to channel I stumbled across RTE 1 - Breaking News! As is obvious it caught our attention and we continued to watch in horror! I let out a gasp and Amy let out a yelp. I could not believe what was before my eyes. A full scale alert was being broad cast on national TV to warn the nation of an explosion of some description at Sellafield. With "breaking news" flashing on the screen before us and an RTE news reporter outside the boundaries, but within full view of the plant itself, what else were we to do but panic! There was plooms of black smoke billowing out of the huge chimneys and I sensed a tone of fear in the reporters voice.

I immediately called home to alert my family in case they were not aware of the situation an my father tried convincing me that it was just a documentary to portray what would happen if there was leak or explosion. But no, I was having none of it. Amy closed all the windows in the apartment and got into a state of panic.

It all seemed too surreal to be true. I couldn't understand why the road out side the apartment seemed to be as always, busy with traffic and pedestrians, so I called home again. My mother came on the phone to try and calm me down and it was only then I realised what a fool I had been as I watched the credits roll up on the screen! Doh!
